Andrew Staniland has received awards for his solo, ensemble, and vocal works, including three prizes in the SOCAN Young Composers Competition. From his roots as a jazz musician, Andrew developed an interest in classical music that led to the completion, in April 2002, of his Master of Music, and his current pursuit of a doctoral degree in composition at the University of Toronto. Andrew's music has been commissioned and performed by ensembles all over Canada. Recent projects include a residency at the Festival of Sound in Parry Sound, Ontario, and a commission from the Amici Chamber Ensemble for its 2002-2003 season.
In 2002 he was named Affiliate Composer to NAC Award Composer Gary Kulesha under the NAC New Music Plan. In this capacity he is working with the NAC on a series of new music education projects, including mentoring during the first edition of the Young Composers Programmes. Two NAC commissions by Mr. Staniland were performed in the summer of 2003.
