Peter Smith is a founding member of the NAC Orchestra. Born in Australia, he came to Ottawa at the age of one and received his early music education here.
While still in high school, he received his ARCT. He continued his studies at the University of Toronto while freelancing on clarinet, saxophone and guitar. He has played in The Toronto Symphony, the National Ballet Orchestra, the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the University Opera Orchestra, the Stratford Opera Orchestra, as well as playing lead clarinet for Duke Ellington. In 1965, he was the first winner in the woodwind category of the CBC National Young Performers Competition. He has performed extensively for the CBC and can be heard on numerous recordings.
A founding member of the Ayorama Woodwind Quintet and the Pierrot Ensemble, he also performs frequently in other chamber music groups. He teaches privately as well as at the University of Ottawa, and formerly at Carleton University and the Conservatoire de Hull.
